Professor Richard N. Juliani has studied immigration and ethnic life, with a focus on the Italian American experience, since his years as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 1960s. In addition to many scholarly articles, his books include The Social Organization of Immigration:The Italians in Philadelphia (Arno Press, 1981); Building Little Italy: Philadelphia’s Italians before Mass Migration (Penn State, 1998); and Priest, Parish and People: Saving the Faith in Philadelphia’s “Little Italy” (Notre Dame, 2007). He has taught at Villanova, Temple, Penn and elsewhere. In addition to teaching sociological theory, race and ethnic relations and urban sociology, he has also developed new courses on the Italian immigration and on Italy as a Modern Society. He served as president of the American Italian Historical Association in 1988-1992.
